A Snapshot
MUST gives you the opportunity to visit some of the best snowboarding mountains
in Australia. In 2010, a group of 40 MUST members travelled up to Mount Hotham
on a 5 Day trip. As soon as the bus arrived at the top of the mountain, everyone
jumped out and hit the slopes for a quick afternoon board.
Throughout the trip, people experienced the adrenalin and excitement that snowboarding brings. Catching the lift up to the top of a run, eagerly looking down upon other skiers and snowboarders. Then once at the top; clipping in their boots and sliding down the mountain for a days boarding.
Even when your legs get tired and back gets sore, you are surrounded by other keen and encouraging snowboarders that will help you to keep going. The MUST members are a mix of beginners who have just started out on the snow, learning what it is all about and those who have been attacking double blacks for years. MUST is committed to teaching and supporting you throughout your trips up to the snow and you will be sure to come back having learnt something new, whether it is perfecting your S-Turn or new tricks at the rail park.
Besides hitting the fresh powder each morning, the MUST snow trips are designed
to help you meet new people who share the same passion of snowboarding as you
do. Whether it is meeting others for a bite to eat back at the lodge at
lunchtime after a morning boarding session, or sharing the days events at the
dinner table at night, you will be sure to create strong relationships with the
people you share this experience with.
Each night at the lodge there are organised themes and activities for all to be involved in. In 2010, MUST members dressed in Formula 1 attire and after a session of games back at the lodge, headed to the local pub where we listened to live music and hit the dance floor.
On a MUST trip, you will wake to the view of the snow covered mountains outside of your window and you'll be out of bed in seconds (waking everyone up around you) to head straight out to make the first tracks on the fresh powdered runs of the day.
This is just a small snap shot of what you are to expect of the Melbourne University Snowboard Team's snow trips. Come and join us, and experience all that the snow can offer, fun, friendship and fresh boarding.

Overview: VIC IVs is the Victorian University championships. It is a massive event where all the Victorian universities come together to ride, race, and party. The racing takes up a small part of the day for the snowboarders, which, together with the awesome lift pass deals, means you can get great value riding for 4 days as well as some great racing in the mornings. Every night the organisers put on social events that all the universities attend, which leads to some pretty wild nights.
The events are Slope Style, Boardercross, and Grand Slalom.
Date To Be Announced
Australian University Championships 2012
Number of people: 18 skiers, 10 boarders
Date: TBA
Location: Mt Buller
Cost: TBA
Nights: 4
Days Riding: 5
All the major universities in Australia attend AUCs. There are more events for both boarders and skiers than at VIC IVs and the competition is tougher. The University of Melbourne often wins the entire competition and so we take it very seriously. Being part of the best team in Australia is quite an awesome experience and totally worth the effort.
Registering to race at AUCs gives you access to all the social events put on by the organisers. Whereas Melbourne and a lot of the bigger universities are there to win, there are heaps of smaller universities that come just to party. One gets a pretty sweet party/racing mix at AUCs. On the last night is a black tie dinner where all the awards are given out.
The events will be Slope Style, Boardercross, Grand Slalom, Half Pipe.
2011 Trips
2011 was a massive year for the members of MUST, with our ‘elite’ sportsmen and women taking on Sorrento, Melbourne, Wanaka NZ, Mt Buller, and the Yarra river; fuelled by excessive amounts of adrenaline and the ancient and revered MUST ‘love punch’ recipe.
Here's a quick overview of some of the snowboarding trips and events that MUST held last year just to give you a bit of an idea of what's in store for 2012
Mid Year Break
New Zealand Trip 2011
Forget the Lord of the Rings trilogy; a new bar has been set in epic journeys. Every moment of this trip was oozing concentrated essence of rad. 3 vans, 36 MUSTies, 5 days of riding, and 3 of the sickest mountains in this corner of the planet.
The mission began with a road trip the likes of which the world has never seen. The fearless MUST crew battled their way through night time blizzards and icy mountain roads as they traversed the treacherous roads between Christchurch and Wanaka. But that was just the start…
The snow gods had indeed heard our call at the Pre-Season party, and had bestowed upon us around 2 metres of fresh powder in the days before our arrival. The conditions were among the best many of us had ever seen, but only for those skilled enough to actually reach the mountains (often by any means possibly). Throughout the week MUST members overcame many obstacles (occasionally involving the use of a tractor) in the pursuit of the rocking pow at the peaks. Numerous freshies were had, sometimes the first run of the season. Put simply, it was the best week of riding you could ever hope for!
But as well as extreme sportsmen and women,MUSTies are also scholars, so we ensured that we had experienced some of the local culture before we left. Primarily this involved heavy consumption of NZ beers and getting stuck in a sheep traffic jam.
By the time we had returned to Christchurch, neither New Zealand nor MUST would ever be the same. We had fallen in love with the country, and with our noble steeds, particularly ‘Hufflepuff’ the little van that could. We vowed that we would return, we would experience the radness in 2012, and that Hufflepuff would ride again. Don’t miss it in 2012.
Victorian Intervarsity Championships 2011
MUST barely had time to get over its hangover from NZ before it was once again on its way up a mountain, this time Mt Buller for the VIC IVs (Inter-university competition). MUST and MUSKI joined forces to give all the other Victorian universities a demonstration of how to ride, and how to party. There was no time for sleep at the IVs, with 3 days of competition and 3 nights of theme parties at different hotpots around Buller. On no other trip will you get so much riding and so much boozing jam packed into just a few days. Snowboarding skill however, was entirely optional.
Semester Two 2011
MUST members are hard. Classes started up again the day after VIC IVs finished and MUSTies took it like the champs that they are. Luckily there were still many more kick-ass events in the works for the weary scholars.
Tight Ass Tuesdays 2011
MUST is always looking out for its members, so even after the prime trip season has passed we ran carpool trips up to Buller on the student discount day, Tuesday.
